THE EVOLVING MAN CAVE
The term "Man Cave" elicits a certain image and reaction. It speaks to what most men feel when they think of their ideal space. When coming up with the name for my business, a well-meaning friend of mine commented that the term “Man Cave” sounded a bit cliché. My reply was, “That’s sort of the point...”
The Old Man Cave
Traditionally, a Man Cave was a tasteless place where men could retreat to express themselves freely. This was born out of a need to surround themselves with the things they love, in a house that was typically seen as the “woman’s domaine”. However, this does not have to be the case. Because these men didn’t have a “voice” in the decorating of the home, the need for a delineated space arose as a rebellious response to inadequate representation in the home. Or they’ve grown up thinking that decorating and home design was beyond their scope of expertise and stayed in limbo between leaving their mother’s home and sharing one with their spouse.
The Modern Man Cave
My mission is to give you the tools to express yourself throughout your home so that you don’t feel the need to do this - to help you feel all the warm fuzzies that accompany the term “man cave”, but with polish and style. This movement is to show the modern man you can have it all – a place to enjoy all your manly stuff and still maintain an organized, chic pad.
But how do you do that? That’s where I come in.
The Man Cave is for you to experience coming home to “you”. My goal is to meet you where your desires initially lead you (ie, big TV, comfy couch, full bar, space for games and entertaining) and give you what you need (polish, efficient organization, tips for manifesting true desires).
Really what anybody wants, male or female, is to be seen, heard, and represented in the safest place they know. Home.
My tongue-in-cheek reference to the "Man Cave" is not to suggest a cliched approach to designing for men, but rather an acknowledgement that this term is ready for an evolution.
